Formed in January 2009, the Medway High School Micorfinance Club is the first such club started by high school students in the US.
The club raises money to support Groups of 10-18 women in Malawi, Africa. The women receive six weeks of training on how to run a business and are each given a micro-loan (up to $200) to start a business; generally farming, fishing or market trading. The women make repayments against the loans every two weeks.
The micro-loan, along with the training allows the women to work their way out of poverty and creates indepenedence from the government and charitable aid.
