Direct's Commitment
We take the security of your personal information very seriously and will always go the extra mile to protect your information and money. In addition to protecting your information, we want to keep you up-to-date on the newest fraud issues and scams.
Direct Federal will NEVER contact you via e-mail to request or verify security information. If you receive a phishing email that has illegally used our name, logo, or website, please forward it to us immediately.
Skilled identity thieves use a variety of methods to steal your personal information, including:
- Dumpster Diving. They rummage through trash looking for bills or other paper with your personal information on it.
- Skimming. They steal credit/debit card numbers by using a special storage device when processing your card. The cards are then used to make new purchases, typically online.
- Phishing. They pretend to be financial institutions or companies and send spam or pop-up messages to get you to reveal your personal information. Typically, they are after your password or PIN, credit card, validation code, ATM or debit card number, social security number or bank account information.
- Vishing or "Voice Phishing”. They use a computer technology called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) that enables thieves to make calls to your phone. They call your home phone number saying that your credit card has been used illegally. You’re asked to dial a fake toll free number in order to confirm your account and credit card numbers. Once you provide this information to the thief, it is used to run up changes to your account.
- Changing Your Address. They divert your billing statements to another location by completing a “change of address” form. This way they can get mail and take the personal information from statements.
- “Old-Fashioned” Stealing. They steal wallets and purses; mail, including bank and credit card statements; pre-approved credit offers; and new checks or tax information. They steal personnel records from their employers, or bribe employees who have access.
