Direct Federal Credit Union proudly announces James Armand of Stoughton as the recipient of the prestigious Dave Johnson Leadership Scholarship for 2026. A recent graduate from Needham High School, James has been recognized for his exceptional leadership, perseverance, and commitment to creating meaningful change within his community.

As president of Students Advocating Life without Substance Abuse (SALSA) at Needham High School, James demonstrated that true leadership is rooted in persistence and advocacy. After reviewing data from the MetroWest Adolescent Health Survey that showed 41% of Needham students reported regular nicotine or vape use, James led his fellow student leaders in developing solutions that extended far beyond traditional awareness campaigns.

Working alongside the Needham Police Department, James helped organize a community Drug Take Back Day before leading an evidence-based effort to advocate for a groundbreaking Nicotine-Free Generation bylaw. Although his initial proposal was rejected by Town Meeting officials due to insufficient data, James refused to give up. Instead, he spent the next two years gathering additional research, collaborating with community partners, and strengthening his case. His perseverance paid off when the proposal was ultimately approved in 2025. Follow-up survey data later showed student nicotine use had declined from 41% to 32%, demonstrating the measurable impact of youth-led advocacy.

This fall, James will attend Union College in Schenectady, New York, where he plans to study Mechanical Engineering.

The Dave Johnson Leadership Scholarship was established in honor of Direct Federal's Chairman Emeritus Dave Johnson, recognizing his decades of dedicated leadership and commitment to developing future leaders. Each year, the scholarship recognizes, rewards, and provides financial assistance to a deserving student who has demonstrated one of Dave's strongest qualities—leadership. James's commitment to advocacy, resilience, and service embodies the spirit of the scholarship and its mission to empower the next generation of changemakers.

Scholarship Details:

• $12,000 Scholarship: $3,000 per year for up to four consecutive years, to be used at the discretion of the recipient.
• Guaranteed Paid Summer Internship: Opportunity to intern at Direct Federal for up to three summers.
